CarnoSyn® Beta-Alanine FAQs

About CarnoSyn

About CarnoSyn®

How does CarnoSyn® beta-alanine work?

CarnoSyn® combines with the amino acid histidine to form another amino acid called carnosine. Over time, carnosine buffers the pH decline that causes the onset of muscle fatigue and failure, while building endurance and improving recovery. pH buffering helps delay or even prevent muscular fatigue and it is critical for cells to function properly. Over 55 clinical studies support the performance benefits of CarnoSyn® beta-alanine.

What’s the difference between CarnoSyn® and generic beta-alanine?

Many years and millions of dollars have been invested in scientific research and stringent quality control, leading CarnoSyn® to become the only beta-alanine that has successfully obtained New Dietary Ingredient (NDI) status with the FDA and that has also achieved Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) self-affirmation. Containing ZERO banned substances, you’ll always know where your ingredients come from—and that they’re safe and effective —with CarnoSyn®.

What is CarnoSyn® beta-alanine derived from?

Beta-alanine is naturally found in poultry, meat and seafood. However, the concentrations found in food are too low to effectively increase carnosine levels. CarnoSyn® is derived from a synthetic material and is exclusively sourced through certified manufacturers. These manufacturers operate under strict quality controls, are regularly audited and each batch undergoes extensive scientific testing to prove its efficacy and potency.

What is the efficacious dosage for CarnoSyn®?

To achieve performance results shown in the latest scientific studies, it is strongly recommended that you consume a daily dose of 3.2-6.4g of beta-alanine as CarnoSyn® or SR CarnoSyn® beta-alanine or at least 28 days.

Do I stop taking CarnoSyn® after the 28-day loading period?

You do not need to stop loading after 28 days, this is the loading period required to experience all the benefits CarnoSyn® can offer. After the loading period, CarnoSyn® should be taken every day to maintain the appropriate levels of carnosine in the body.

What is NDI status and what does it mean?

In 2019, CarnoSyn® beta-alanine established New Dietary Ingredient (NDI) status. Receiving FDA approval as an NDI ingredient reaffirms CarnoSyn’s commitment to deliver the safest and highest-quality solutions to athletes and brand partners, and further distinguishes CarnoSyn from generic forms of beta-alanine with questionable quality and effectiveness.

What is GRAS and what does it mean?

Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS)-status means that CarnoSyn® is considered a safe and effective ingredient. All food ingredients must have GRAS or self-affirmed GRAS status. To hold GRAS status enables CarnoSyn® beta-alanine to be used in food products like RTM drinks, bars & protein mixes.

Does CarnoSyn® beta-alanine contain any banned substances?

CarnoSyn® is not a banned substance and is not listed by any of the following authorities for banned substances: NFLPA, NCAA, MLB, WADA and IOC.

Who distributes CarnoSyn®?

Natural Alternatives International (NAI) is the sole distributor for all countries except Japan. Shimizu Chemical Corporation is the authorized distributor for Japan.

What is the difference between Carnosine & CarnoSyn®?

CarnoSyn® is the trademark name of beta-alanine. Carnosine is a dipeptide molecule, made up of the amino acids beta-alanine and histidine.

Why is ingesting carnosine directly ineffective?

Ingested carnosine breaks down in the body into beta-alanine and histidine on absorption from the gut and only micro amounts of beta-alanine are found in the blood stream. Research has shown that enough histidine is naturally present in the body to meet the demands of muscles for synthesis of carnosine, and that the limiting factor is beta-alanine. Beta-alanine supplementation augments the small amounts available from (1) synthesis in the liver, and (2) from the ingestion of meat and fish. Supplemental beta-alanine combines with the naturally occurring histidine to increase the levels of carnosine.

How does natural aging impact muscle carnosine levels?

As muscle mass decreases with age, so do muscle carnosine levels. CarnoSyn® beta-alanine supports increased muscle mass, which can help maintain higher levels of muscle carnosine in our aging population.

Why do vegetarians need to supplement muscle carnosine?

Most individuals do not consume enough beta-alanine in their diets to increase athletic performance. And, because beta-alanine is most often found in meat sources, vegetarian athletes can have an even greater need to supplement beta-alanine levels. The synthesis of beta-alanine in the liver, the only source available to vegetarians, is very low in humans and can only maintain low levels of muscle carnosine.

About SR CarnoSyn

About SR CarnoSyn®

What is the difference between SR CarnoSyn® and CarnoSyn®?

The CarnoSyn® brand features two ingredients: CarnoSyn® instant release beta-alanine and SR CarnoSyn® sustained release beta-alanine. Both ingredients deliver the same benefits for athletic performance: increased strength, enhanced endurance, faster recovery, and greater focus. Sustained release SR CarnoSyn® is an advanced delivery form of CarnoSyn®, which delivers higher dosing levels of beta-alanine. SR CarnoSyn® results in a sustained release beta-alanine that stays in the body longer for carnosine synthesis. The net effect is higher muscle retention of carnosine, facilitating better, faster, muscle-building results.

How does the sustained-release technology work in SR CarnoSyn®?

SR CarnoSyn® is a patented, sustained release version of CarnoSyn® beta-alanine, essential to the body’s production of carnosine. This uniquely formulated sustained release formula enables larger servings of CarnoSyn® beta-alanine to be taken without reaching the paresthesia-sensation threshold typically associated with beta-alanine supplementation.

I’m using CarnoSyn®, why should I upgrade to SR CarnoSyn®?

SR CarnoSyn® sustained release beta-alanine is a superior delivery system of CarnoSyn® beta-alanine. Muscle cells can only absorb a fixed amount of beta-alanine in a short period; thus, when taking instant release beta-alanine the remaining beta-alanine is metabolized and/or excreted from the body. SR CarnoSyn® prolongs the supply of beta-alanine, therefore maximizing absorption and retention in muscle tissue, and it enables higher dosing with minimal to no paresthesia, improving peak performance.

Does SR CarnoSyn® eliminate paresthesia?

SR CarnoSyn® features a sustained release profile designed to buffer paresthesia associated with instant release beta-alanine. Sensitivity may vary depending upon the individual and the dosage amount and the variety of food intake prior to supplementing with SR CarnoSyn®.

What is the efficacious dosage for SR CarnoSyn®?

To achieve performance results shown in the latest scientific studies, it is strongly recommended that you consume a daily dose of 3.2-6.4g of beta-alanine as CarnoSyn® or SR CarnoSyn® beta-alanine or at least 28 days.

Do I stop taking SR CarnoSyn® after the 28-day loading period?

You do not need to stop loading after 28 days, this is the loading period required to experience all the benefits SR CarnoSyn® can offer. After the loading period, SR CarnoSyn® should be taken every day to maintain the appropriate levels of carnosine in the body.

Is SR CarnoSyn® suitable vegans & vegetarians?

SR CarnoSyn® beta-alanine is suitable for both vegans & vegetarians. In fact, vegetarians need to supplement muscle carnosine because beta-alanine is most often found in meat sources, vegetarian athletes can have an even greater need to supplement beta-alanine levels. The synthesis of beta-alanine in the liver, the only source available to vegans, is very low in humans and can only maintain low levels of muscle carnosine.
